​Water fluoridation: Public consultation launched

In order to inform that legislation, the Department of Health and Social Care has launched a public consultation seeking views on how it proposes to consult on future water fluoridation schemes. The consultation will run from 8 April to 3 June. We will be responding as an organisation, but responses are also welcomed from individuals.
Subject to its passage through Parliament, the Health and Care Bill will transfer the power to initiate, vary or terminate water fluoridation schemes from local authorities to the Secretary of State. There will also be a legal duty on the Secretary of State to undertake a formal public consultation on future water fluoridation proposals. Secondary legislation that will be brought forward later in the year will set out the consultation process. Once feedback is considered the Government will publish a response. You may also wish to be aware that the latest Water Fluoridation Health Monitoring Report was published on 21 March 2022 and is available here.

Q1 Disagree. Do you agree or disagree that any future consultation should continue to be limited to individuals living in areas directly affected by any future water fluoridation proposals and bodies with an interest?
A1)Limiting consultations to geographic areas restricts access to views held by knowledgeable individuals with a special interest in the subject. The arguments are the same for each area and those interested in the subject and motivated enough to contribute should be drawn from the widest possible section of society, including internationally as many individuals already living in fluoridated areas would have useful insights to contribute. Completing consultations is time consuming and most contributors would be doing so for altruistic reasons. You don't define 'bodies' and when defined may result in unrecognised special interest groups being prevented from sharing their knowledge and views at a local level.
Q2)Should consultation responses be considered from individuals living in areas not directly affected by, or bodies without an interest in, any future water fluoridation proposals?
A2) Yes. This appears to be the same question in reverse and really only relates to the individual as it seems unlikely that a body without an interest in water fluoridation would be interested to contributed to an field outside their interest, expertise or remit. There are many individuals with strongly held views based upon personal experience and reading of the scientific literature who have the interests of their fellow citizens at heart and would wish to help. There are those who whilst not living in the area may have family members who would affected and they would wish to speak for.
