Letter: Fluoride isn't a solution, it is part of the problem

In response to Dr. Ronald Maitland's oped column regarding dental health care (Eagle, March 8), it is highly commendable that Dr. Maitland provides dental services to the poor and sad that these services are not available for so much of our population that is in dire need of dental care. However, artificially fluoridated water is not the answer to the problem and it's time that dentists who are experts in their field but who are not experts in toxicology or chemistry stop insisting that every citizen be medicated with a toxic drug every day of our lives from cradle to grave.

Fluoride is classified by the EPA as a neurotoxin and endocrine disruptor that affects the thyroid gland. We now know that fluoride crosses the placenta and lowers IQ in children. The International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology (IAOMT) is a professional organization whose goal is education. IAOMT has a put out a position paper against water fluoridation that includes over 500 citations. You can read it here: https://iaomt.org/wp-content/uploads/IAOMT-Fluoride-Position-Paper.pdf.

Most of the developed world has rejected water fluoridation for medical and ethical reasons, a decision supported by Nobel Prize-winning scientists, thousands of medical and scientific professionals and key leaders in the environmental health community. Claiming that fluoridation works is disingenuous. Most of the developed world does not fluoridate, including 97 percent of Western Europe where the rate of tooth decay is no worse than ours. It's time to do what works, give children good nutrition, educate them and their parents about oral health care and give families access to affordable dental care. Fluoridation is an ongoing failed experiment that belongs on the trash heap. That's obvious by the fact that fluoride has been in the drinking water for 70-plus years while the dental crisis alarm continues to sound.
