World maps showing fluoride

This map is dated as it shows the plans to fluoridate Southampton/Totton/Eastleigh. NHS spent £1 million in the failed attempt. They gave up but never stop trying to bring it in elsewhere.

It is worth remembering that, from 2005 to 2011 the National Pure Water Association, and others, pursued a relentless campaign against the proposed fluoridation of ‘Greater Manchester’. The area under threat was at that time under the auspices of the North West Strategic Health Authority (NWSHA) the influence of which stretched from Blackpool to Glossop and from Preston to the Wirral. The NWSHA were expected to be the first health authority to call a consultation under the 2005 legislation regarding new fluoridation schemes. South Central SHA (SCSHA) beat them to it and NWSHA shelved their plans pending the result of the consultation in Southampton and district. Finally, this report in the Lancashire Telegraph declared the North West fluoridation scheme had been abandoned and gave the reasons which are, no doubt, still valid.

The Strategic Health Authorities were abolished in 2013 and the legislation regarding fluoridation has since changed; local councillors now have a greater input into fluoridation decisions. History records that the anti-fluoridation campaign in Andover (1955 to 1958) saw the public’s rejection of councillors supporting fluoridation which served to “turn the Borough Council on its head, devastate the careers of several public figures …and all but destroy the local Labour Party”.
