Fluoride trays post radiation and chemo

My husband is using fluoride trays every day for 10 minutes( morning and evening). Has anyone had experience with this? My husband started experiencing burning of the side. of tongue and the gum on his left side. Also some heartburn started after the beginning of the fluoride treatment. The dentist has told him that he will need to use the fluoride trays for life...if this is necessary can he get by with less? I appreciate all of your feed back.
