Australia - Protesters "disgusted" as Lismore council votes in favour of fluoride

Protesters "disgusted" as Lismore council votes in favour of fluoride
By Margaret Burin Angry community members yelled while leaving the Lismore Council Chambers public gallery, as a council majority voted in favour of fluoridating the area's water supply. This is the third time this year council has voted on the issue.
"This is a sign of disgust," yelled Byron Bay resident Andy Holm as he threw his shoe before walking out of the Lismore City Council chambers.
About 100 people turned up to the meeting at the council chambers.
A motion to not flouridate the water supply was defeated 5-6.
This is the last time Lismore councillors will debate the issue.
Another motion passed means the fluoride matter now lies with the State Government.
Mayor Jenny Dowell repeatedly asked anti-fluoride protesters to be quiet, reminding them that "this is not a concert", as councillors addressed questions and voiced opinions.
There was uproar in the public gallery as a majority voted in favour of fluoridation.
Many yelled as they walked out of the room and one man threw a shoe into the middle of the council chambers.
Councillors voted 6-5 against fluoride in August.
That decision was rescinded in September, when a vote concluded 6-5 in support of fluoridation.
Councillor Vanessa Ekins put up the most recent motion, calling for the council to advise Rous Water that it does not support fluoridation of the local government area water supply.
Cr Ekins said that council should not proceed because of a lack of evidence of community support, inconclusive science and its compulsory nature.
Rous Water has been making plans to implement fluoridation after the council's September meeting.
A second motion on the issue put forward by councillor Neil Marks, proposed that if council voted to support fluoridation, the decision would then be left to the State Government.
He said this would stop the debate returning again in another couple of months, giving Rous Water and everyone else concerned certainty.
