HAMILTON, Ill. –– A small Tri-State Area city operation has received a big honor from an association of its peers.
The Hamilton Water Department has been selected as Water Plant of the Year, a designation conferred by the Illinois Rural Water Association at its annual conference in Effingham, Ill.
“Hamilton has met or exceeded all compliance standards, and is managed, maintained and operated to the highest industry standards,” said Frank Dunmire, executive director of the Illinois Water Association.
Industry standards include appearance, record keeping, compliance and consistency of operations.
Water Superintendent Tim Schilson, who accepted the award on his department’s behalf, is thrilled and proud of his department’s success.
“We have a newer plant and the guys have done a good job maintaining it,” Schilson said. He and water plant employees Aron Metternich, Chris Mott and Brent Reneau run the plant 365 days per year.
“We probably have the highest trained staff in the association. We have four full time Class A operators licensed in Illinois. I don’t know of any other department that does,” Schilson said.
“That was a goal of mine and the guys did it. I just encouraged them and they put in a lot of effort. I’m proud of them and it works out good,” he added.
Over the course of a year, sometimes a single operator will be on duty. Having staff qualified and licensed to run the plant and make decisions is “obviously a comfort to me and to the community when I’m gone to meetings or on vacation,” Schilson said. “And it’s nice when I have a technical problem we can all sit down and brainstorm. I view it as a positive thing.”.....................

A bit like giving an award to someone for keeping to the speed limit. What about the majority who exceed limits?
