Public should heed fluoride warning by National Kidney Foundation

Letter: Public should heed fluoride warning by National Kidney Foundation
Wednesday, June 11, 2008
Before the referendum on fluoridation, the dental community besieged the News’ readers with half-page ads that read, “Everybody benefits from fluoride in drinking water.” The National Kidney Foundation disagrees.

According to its new position paper dated April 15, the NKF concluded individuals with chronic kidney disease should be notified of the potential risk of exposure to fluorides.

Fluoridated water is now acknowledged to be potentially harmful to patients on dialysis machines. The position paper lists cases where dialysis patients have died or were poisoned by fluoride when the machines’ filtration systems allowed fluoride into the bodies of the patients. Dan Stockin, a public health professional working at The Lillie Center Inc. in Ellijay, Ga., says fluoride must be removed from water used for dialysis.

How do people with kidney stones, transplants or other kidney issues who ingest fluoride in drinking water, bottled water, foods, drugs, et al, get notified when fluoride labeling is not required in the United States as in Europe?

Will employers who, by law must provide water to employees, risk hydrating workers with potential kidney problems with fluoridated water?

Will restaurants located within the boundaries of the fluoridated city of Stuart consider advising customers with possible kidney issues that fluoridated water is being used on the premises?

Will medical doctors prescribing medications with fluoride advise their kidney patients?
Will surgeons offer fluoride-free anesthetics?
Will pool users need to decrease their exposure to fluoridated water?
Finally, will dentists tell their patients these facts?
