USA - Bill would require fluoride in drinking water

Bill would require fluoride in drinking water

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - Cities and towns with at least 1,000 residents would have to add fluoride to their water, under a bill that senators have advanced.
The goal is to reduce tooth decay.
Towns and cities that don't fluoridate their water can vote before June 1, 2010, to opt out of the law if it were to pass. Those places where there is enough naturally occurring fluoride wouldn't have to add any.
The bill could affect 60 and 75 water systems that don't add fluoride.
Many Nebraska towns already add fluoride to water, but some have voted since the 1970s to opt out of a current law that requires it. Those cities and towns would have to vote again if they wanted to opt out.
Senators gave the bill (LB245) first-round approval Tuesday.
