Standing as a proponent of fluoridation

Standing as a proponent of fluoridation

Dear Editor:
As the debate rages on, “to fluoride or not to fluoride,” it is hard to know which is best for our community. I for one have no problem standing as a proponent of fluoridation. I trust that the American Dental Association, American Medical Association, American Association of Public Health, United States Public Health Service and the World Health Organization have done their homework, allowing them to endorse the fluoridation of public water systems.

It is estimated that 170 million Americans are served by fluoridated water systems. Where is the evidence of the alleged health problems that result from fluoride? I do not see or read about these problems. Communities have fluoridated water for over 60 years. Don’t you think health issues would have been identified by at least one of the above-mentioned organizations?

If our community does in fact fluoridate the water, I remain confident that the city water department is capable of supplying and monitoring safe and healthy levels of fluoride. By doing so, they can provide this benefit to those people who do not have the means to acquire regular dental care.
