Brady challenges Health Secretary over fluoridating water supplies
By Chris Griffin
GRAHAM BRADY has challenged the Health Secretary Alan Johnson over a move to fluoridate water supplies The Altrincham and Sale West MP, an opponent of fluoridation, spoke out in the debate on the issue in the House of C Commons.
Mr Johnson urged the NHS to consider fluoridating tap water for those areas with poor dental health.
He announced that he was providing extra funding for fluoridation schemes and pointed out that non-fluoridated Manchester has twice the rate of tooth decay as fluoridated Birmingham.
But Mr Brady said that ministers are aware that the American Dental Association says fluoridated water is not safe for infant milk formula. He asked Mr Johnson what he would do to protect those children's teeth.
Alan Johnson replied that dental fluorosis was the only proven problem with fluoridation.
Afterwards Mr Brady said: "I am opposed to the mass medication of our drinking water. The Government has shown today that it is determined to press ahead with fluoridation despite the fact that several concerns have been raised about its safety and there are alternative ways to ensure good dental health which do not involve interfering with our drinking water.
"It would be far better if the Government made sure that more people have access to an NHS dentist."
