Australia - Rally fuels fluoride protest
Rally fuels fluoride protest
ANTI-fluoride protesters stormed Parliament House yesterday demanding the Brumby Government scrap its plans to fluoridate Geelong's water.
They were part of a mass rally yesterday, which also included protesters from groups campaigning against the State Government's plan to deepen Port Phillip Bay and residents from the Goulburn Valley voiced opposition towards a pipeline proposal to pump water to Melbourne.
Water Quality Australia Inc secretary David McRae was among protesters and said it was time the State Government started to listen to Geelong people.
``Fluoride in our water will harm our people and the Government has done no background research to see how much toxic we are already consuming from pollution and other products,'' Mr McRae said.
``The Government is not listening to a vast majority of people who don't want it in their water and their whole consultation process has been an utter sham.''
He said a referendum should be held before any decision about fluoridating the region's waters happened.
``How can they put toxic chemicals down our throat without asking us first,'' Mr McRae said.
Government ministers were heckled yesterday as they made their way to State Parliament.
The Government has said on several occasions fluoridating Geelong's water would have no impact on people's health and recently released a booklet speaking of the benefits of fluoride, which formed part of their consultation process.
Fluoride protesters are planning another rally starting at 1pm in Myers St on March 21 and ending at the Steampacket Gardens.
