Paediatrician shocked at kids' teeth
Jan 17, 2008 6:50 AM
A paediatrician is appalled at statistics showing Kiwi kids' teeth are getting worse.
Almost half of the country's children under five years of age have dental caries, otherwise known as tooth decay. In August 2006, the government announced it was replacing the school dental service with new community oral health clinics in a bid to improve the worsening state of children's teeth.
The move has been towards bigger community-based centres, open longer hours and set up in the likes of community centres, or alongside other health services.
Paediatrician Dr Marguerite Dalton says the recent figures on children's teeth are disappointing. She says she was hoping to see some improvement, but in some places they are worse.
Dalton says children need to have fewer sugary drinks and foods and it is essential children brush and floss twice a day.
What I find hard to understand is how any parent with a history of rotten teeth can allow their children to go through the pain and distress that they suffered.
