Canada - There are good reasons to wait on fluoridation

There are good reasons to wait on fluoridation

In Thursday's West Island section of The Gazette, editor Alycia Ambroziak cites "technical and bureaucratic delays" before Quebec's Health Department gives a final okay for fluoridation of water in Dorval. There is a reason for this, primarily because fluoride is a poison, to the extent that a special outdoor storage facility had to be built adjacent to the water treatment plant in Dorval, as fluoride is not allowed within the plant itself due to safety regulations.
And still, well-meaning but uninformed parents call for its return, putting everyone's health at risk, particularly those bathing in and drinking the water.
While everyone agrees that dental fluoride is beneficial for the prevention of cavities in teeth, this should only be performed at a dental facility with medical-grade fluoride. Parents should not be denied fluoride if they truly believe that it is good for their children's teeth. They can also purchase readily available toothpastes and mouthwashes with fluoride; most do.
On the other hand, all citizens do not need to be subjected to fluoride, period. It is a poison.
More and more cities in North America are understanding the dangers of water fluoridation to the general population and are turning away from it. Water fluoridation should not be a substitute for parents' poor dental care of children.
Further news is that Quebec City will stop fluoridation by 2008. Why would we want this toxin back?
