A product labeled "Colgate Toothpaste" sold in discount stores on the East Coast may be contaminated with a chemical in antifreeze and is being recalled.
The manufacturer, MS USA Trading, Inc. of North Bergen, N.J., is pulling all 5 oz. tubes of its "Colgate Toothpaste" off the market because they may contain diethylene glycol, which can cause kidney and liver disease. The Food and Drug Administration, which announced the recall in a news release, said it had found the chemical in the toothpaste during routine testing. The tubes, including regular, gel, triple and herbal, were sold in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Maryland discount retail stores. The toothpaste boxes says they were made in South Africa.
The product was not made by the Colgate-Palmolive Co., which said in a separate news release today that it has never made toothpaste in South Africa and that the product was counterfeit. The company said that besides being contaminated with an antifreeze chemical, the product does not contain fluoride.

None in the UK?
