Qld Liberal MP calls for water fluoridation
A prominent state Liberal MP says it would be hypocritical for the Premier not to fluoridate south-east Queensland's water when the state takes control of bulk supplies.
The Opposition's Health Spokesman, John-Paul Langbroek, is also a dentist who has long advocated for fluoridation. While the Coalition is yet to decide on its stance, Dr Langbroek says he is confident he can convince his Nationals colleagues to support the move. He says Premier Peter Beattie has always encouraged councils to add fluoride to supplies but now the ball is in his court he is floundering.
"I have no doubt that because it involves spending money - and he's spent a lot of it lately - he's loathe to do it unless he absolutely has," Dr Langbroek said. "I think it's something for the sake of Queensland's kids he should be doing."
