USA - Mount Desert Votes To Rid Drinking Water Of Fluoride

Mount Desert Votes To Rid Drinking Water Of Fluoride
The town of Mount Desert will be first community in Maine to stop putting fluoride in its drinking water supply.
Residents voted last week for the town to discontinue adding fluoride to the water after the water district informed them of two studies that indicate drinking fluoridated water can lead to an increased risk of bone cancer and fractures.
"The premise of adding fluoride to drinking water was people felt it had to be ingested. Now they're saying it's a topical application only," said Paul Slack, of the Mount Desert Water District.
However, one dentist from Mount Desert says those reports are based on consuming extreme amounts of fluoride.
"It sets a dangerous precedent in the state for other communities, and is putting children at great risk and at great harm in the state of Maine. Misinforming them of the health affects of fluoride when we known that fluoride is one of the most beneficial additives we can add to our diets," said Jonathan Shenkin, pediatric dentist.
Mount Desert plans to stop putting fluoride into the drinking water within the next week.
