Hunters asked to be alert for chronic wasting disease in deer
SAINT REGIS MOHAWK RESERVATION, N.Y. Local hunters are being asked to help environmental officials from the Saint Regis Mohawk Reservation check wild deer for early signs of chronic wasting disease.
The tribe's Environmental Division staff wants Franklin and Saint Lawrence county hunters to let tissue samples be taken from the heads of deer they kill.
Chronic wasting disease has been found in two captive deer herds farther south in Oneida County. It is believed caused by abnormal protein particles in the brain. Infected animals lose weight, behave erratically, become disoriented and die.
There is no evidence C-W-D is harmful to humans or other domestic livestock.
Tribal Environmental Division Director Ken Jock says his office is already working with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to study how fluoride emissions from the Reynolds and Alcoa plants affect deer.
The factories are located west of the reservation, by the Saint Lawrence River and Canadian border.Jock tells the Plattsburgh Press-Republican their tissue samples from deer are also tested for other chemical contamination.
