Generations of women last night demanded an urgent inquiry into a medical drug they call the ‘silent thalidomide’.  A synthetic oestrogen called Diethylstilbestrol (DES) was given to pregnant women to prevent miscarriage & dry up breast milk.  But it’s linked to cancer & infertility etc.   It has ravaged the bodies of 3 generations of UK women.  Incredibly, DES is still given to treat prostate cancer & post-menopausal breast cancer.  MPs & victims last night called for an investigation.  Royal College of Obstetrics & Gynaecology estimate 10,000 patients were prescribed DES.  Its harmful effects can be passed through generations, so 10s of 1,000s of victims may be unaware they or their parents were exposed to it. Women prescribed it are thought to be 30% more at risk of breast cancer.  Their ‘DES’ daughters are 40 times more at risk of adenocarcinoma cervical cancer, & 8 x more likely to suffer neonatal death.  They’re 5 x more likely to have a premature birth & are at risk of early menopause, infertility & ectopic pregnancies.  Sons of mothers prescribed it are at increased risk of infertility & testicular cancer.  In USA 5m may have been exposed to DES.  A 1953 study showed it was not effective at preventing miscarriage, but DES continued to be prescribed.   MHRA said it was recognised in 1971 that the drug  “could cause a distinct type of cancer in the daughters of women” who took it in early pregnancy.  Despite calls from victims, Dept of Health says it has no plans to launch an inquiry.
