UK - Oldham backs national campaign to promote good oral health

Oldham Council is asking residents to do their bit and back a nation-wide oral health campaign that promotes improving and maintaining a healthy mouth.
National Smile Month takes place between Monday 14 May and Thursday 14 June.

Whether it be ensuring that you are brushing your teeth last thing at night and on at least one other occasion every day with a family fluoride toothpaste, cutting down on how often you have sugary food and drinks, or even just booking in a regular appointment with your dentist, there are various ways in which you can have good oral health.

Oldham’s under-fives, in particular, have some of the worst tooth decay in the country and the council is calling for vital co-operative action to help stop the rot.
As part of this, the council has organised a variety of events to take place across the borough over the next four weeks to help remind residents about the importance of good oral health, so we can all enjoy having a healthy smile.
Oldham is also part of Greater Manchester’s Start Well programme which aims to improve oral health by building on existing provision.

Through the programme supervised toothbrushing will be delivered in early years settings, school nurseries and reception classes.

Families will be given oral health advice and fluoride toothpaste and toothbrushes from their health visitors and from those Dental Practices who are part of the Baby Teeth DO Matter scheme.

Children from three years old will also have fluoride varnish applied to their teeth at least twice a year.

Councillor Eddie Moores, Cabinet Member for Health and Wellbeing said: “Without good oral health, we are unable to communicate, eat and enjoy a variety of foods and socialise. This can affect our self-esteem, confidence, and readiness to learn – especially if you are a child.
“That is why it is incredibly important to have a healthy mouth as it aids to both our general health and wellbeing.

“With that in mind, we are hosting a variety of local events for this year’s national Smile Month campaign to help reinforce our key messages around how you can improve and maintain your oral health - and how you can keep that all important smile.

“So if you feel you need more information around how you can maintain a healthy mouth, or you are just looking for some tips on how you could be better marinating your oral health, please do come down to our events.

“Alternatively, why not keep an eye on our social media channels and our website for useful tips on how to brush your teeth correctly and more.”
