Tuesday March 1, 2016 (foodconsumer.org) -- Fluoride is known to lower IQ in children, cause hypothyroidism, and increase risk of bone cancer and skeletal/dental fluorosis. A new study has for the first time found that a γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA), a common supplement, may help ameliorate the toxicity of fluoride and help hypothyroidism.

For the study, male mice were subject to subacute injection of sodium fluoride and these mice without being treated with GABA were found to have lower serum T4, T3 and thyroid hormone-binding globulin. Fluoride exposure also led to structural abnormalities in thyroid follicles.

When fluoride-exposed mice were treated with GABA, the metabolic toxicity of fluoride was decreased and the microstructure and ultrastructure of the thyroid gland was largely normalized. In the treated mice, the thyroid-stimulating hormone level was increased and the inhibitory effect was enhanced against apoptosis in thyroid follicular epithelial cells.

Fluoride is commonly added in public drinking water systems in hopes that this practice (fluoridation) can help lower the risk of dental caries even though a growing body of evidence has suggested fluoride does not really cut the risk while over-exposure to thi…
