A 2006 study from the University of Iowa concluded that to prevent fluorosis on the permanent front teeth, children should not be exposed to fluoride until they are 5 years old. That fall the American Dental Association e-mailed its members a warning that infants should not be given fluoridated water.

Still in 2006 an article came out in the British medical Journal, Lancet, linking fluoride to damage to the developing brain. In 2007 the Center for Disease control released a study that showed that one in three American teenagers now have visible signs of dental fluorosis. Also in 2007 two new studies confirmed the link between silicofluorides and increased blood lead levels.

Considering all of this, can anyone explain why Yuma pediatricians continue to recommend use of fluoridated water for infants?

CAROLE PEREZ, Yuma
